Partant du lynchage d’un Noir par trois Blancs, Sud dépeint un Texas nostalgique de son passé esclavagiste. Dans une alternance de plans fixes et de longs travellings, Chantal Akerman va reconstituer l’horrible fait divers qui eut lieu en juin 1998 à Jasper. Un Noir a été enchaîné à un camion et traîné pendant plusieurs kilomètres sur une route, par trois jeunes Blancs. La victime était un musicien. Les criminels appartenaient à des groupes d’extrême droite.

Starting with the lynching of a black man by three white people, Sud depicts a Texas nostalgic for its slavery past. In an alternation of static shots and long tracking shots, Chantal Akerman will reconstruct the horrible news item that took place in June 1998 in Jasper. A black man was chained to a truck and dragged for several kilometers on a road by three young white men. The victim was a musician. The criminals belonged to far-right groups.
